He noticed that we were booked into the Vineyard Tour and asked if we would like to share a taxi with another couple who had just arrived. The original trio consisted of Bill Owen as the scruffy and childlike Compo Simmonite, Peter Sallis as deep-thinking and meek Norman Clegg and Michael Bates as authoritarian and snobbish Cyril Blamire. It centres around three old reprobates trying to relive their childhood. We ate outside in the patio, even if there was a lot of traffic, it was nice. There may be some support for my view that the earlier episodes, which featured 'Blamire'( Michael Bates)as one of the three leading characters, were characterised by the interplay between these three characters, expressed in terms of dialogue rather than the 'comic' situations which became a feature of later episodes, coupled with the development of other characters who played little or no part in the first series. This episode is notable for the introduction of Eli, the well meaning but short sighted wartime pal of Wally Batty who always got into scrapes but there is nothing wrong with his distant vision as he spots Wally from half a mile away. Beautiful accommodation, lovely food and wonderful staff. The staff didn't even mention us dripping all over their carpet. Holmfirth, Drinks: These were good although we had almost finished them by the time the food had arrived.Food: The fish goujons (starter) were very greasy; the venison sausages were more like chipolatas and looked more like a starter portion than a main meal; the cheese and onion pie was firm and full although it probably needed some sort of gravy or cheese sauce accompaniment. The desserts were good and finished off the meal.I would say that, for what we got, it was a bit overpriced. Nothing was too much trouble even ordering food when the kitchen had closed, we were served one of the best steak pies we had ever tasted.Carrying on from the steak pie all of the food we had was excellent.Rooms were spotless and very adequate, lovely views from it.I cannot speak highly enough about this inn. Curiously, though, this popularity was not wholly shared by the population of Holmfirth, who saw the programme as a mixed blessing when the interest generated by the programme resulted in an influx of sightseers into their small, quiet narrow streeted town, with predictable results. Hello, why did the Eurovision fans visit? We were there on hottest days of the year and iced water on tap all day. Lovely surroundings and so peaceful. It may be that the reason for the success of the programme is that it presents a world that no longer exists, a set of endearing characters, lost in their own little world, steeped in a kind of rural simplicity from which the harsh values and events of the real world are permanently excluded, playing the sort of schoolboy adventures in which we may, at one time, have all shared. All were accounted for, all but Omaira's body, and the guards on the walls told of a screaming figure of a child, wreathed in bright light, charging out the wall We only went for drinks and a toilet stop and stayed for a few hours.
